Sailor Moon Cosplay

Published in Sailor Moon Cosplay

Manga and anime costumes are growing more popular as cartoons, graphic novels, and live-action shows are increasing, and Sailor Moon costumes are one of the most sought-after choices for girls of all ages.

About Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon is a popular Japanese manga character–a teenage school girl named Usagi Tsukino (in the English translation, Serena)–who magically transforms into a mystical heroine with astronomical powers. She and her fellow classmates–also fantastical superhero characters–battle the forces of evil to save the solar system from destruction by harnessing the powers of the moon and stars. Sailor Moon actually has several different personas, giving fans several options for recognizable Sailor Moon costumes, including the reincarnation of Sailor Moon’s ancestress, Princess Serenity, and several more powerful versions of herself such as Eternal Sailor Moon. Each persona, however, has similarities that can be used for any variation of this manga costume.

Elements of Sailor Moon Costumes

Through the different comics, television cartoons, and live-action shows, Sailor Moon’s outfits and accessories have subtly changed, but each one has certain characteristics that make costumes easy to create from scratch. After all, because Sailor Moon is a human character, she does not require elaborate masks or makeup, and a simple costume can effectively convey her spirited personality.

Odango Hair Styles

Sailor Moon’s most distinctive feature is her “meatball” or “donut” hair style in her bright blond hair, properly referred to as an odango hair style. This style has two spherical buns on the upper sides of the head, each with trailing ponytails. To create this style:

  1. Tie hair into two high, even ponytails using thin ponytail bands.
  2. Twist each ponytail toward the center of the head to make it stiffer and easier to work with.
  3. Tie the ponytail into a simple knot and draw it tight to the scalp to form the characteristic sphere.
  4. Use a second ponytail band to hold the knot in place tight against the head.

This characteristic style is Sailor Moon’s single most important feature; without it, her distinctive look is lost.

Clothing

Costume clothing is the first thing most people notice, and in many cases, it is also the most recognizable. Sailor Moon’s signature outfit is a sassy version of a sailor suit, with a white, wide square collared top and a short blue skirt, both accented by big, floppy red bows–one at the collar and one at the small of the back. Bright primary colors and shiny, metallic fabrics are best, though alternative characters in the Sailor Moon series wear similar outfits in different colors and any costume in this style would be associated with the popular series. Sailor Moon routinely wears knee-high red boots, another distinctive feature of a realistic costume.

Accessories

The key to a great costume is using the proper accessories for superior detail. Accessories to complement Sailor Moon costumes include:

  • A crescent moon pendant, or crescent moons used as accents on the costume’s clothing.
  • A makeup compact, which Sailor Moon frequently uses to transform from Serena to her superhero persona.
  • A small crystal tiara, particularly if you are dressing as one of Sailor Moon’s more powerful variations or a princess variation.
  • Body glitter on the arms, cheeks, or eyelids to add astronomical sparkle to the costume.
  • A large, round, faceted crystal – the famed Silver Crystal that is one of Sailor Moon’s power sources.
  • White or pink accents on the costume – Sailor Moon’s favorite colors.
  • Large, shoulder-to-hip white angel wings if using the Eternal Sailor Moon costume.
  • An adult black cat – perfectly appropriate for Halloween costumes, but in this case also representing Luna, the talking cat that first discovered Serena and introduced her to her powers.

Ready-Made Sailor Moon Costumes

If making a Sailor Moon costume from scratch isn’t possible, several costume retailers do offer basic Sailor Moon costumes that can be purchased. The basic costume includes the classic red, white, and blue dress with floppy bows as well as the red knee boots and (sometimes) a small matching choker necklace. Online merchants who carry Sailor Moon styles include:

  • A classic style in different sizes.
  • Sailor Moon and related characters’ costumes.
  • Sailor Moon gear and accessories.

Adding different details, including the odango hairstyle, to ready-made costumes can make them just as distinctive with far less effort than creating homemade Halloween costumes.

A few years ago Japanese animation was nothing more than an isolated fad, but today the dozens of colorful characters are popular icons for children and teenagers. Sailor Moon costumes are one of the favorite choices for girls, and there are many ways a girl can make her very own Sailor Moon style.

Naruto Costumes

Kids will love dressing up as their favorite anime character. They will have fun looking just like the misfit ninja in training. Watch out, Ninja in training!

Naruto’s a hit on Cartoon Network and in the pages of Shonen Jump, so it’s easy to see why Naruto costumes are just as popular.

Why Wear a Naruto Costume?

Naruto is a popular anime and manga (Japanese animation and comics) series focusing on the exploits of a group of ninjas in training as they seek to become the most powerful in their village.

In addition to dressing up for Halloween parties, anime fans will sometimes dress as their favorite characters while attending conventions, a practice known as Naruto cosplay. Dedicated cosplayers will sew detailed outfits and accessories, dedicating countless hours to each Naruto costume.

The Main Characters and Their Clothing

Whether you’re creating Naruto costumes from scratch or assembling one from pieces you already have around the house, you can become your favorite Naruto character by paying attention to the details.

Naruto

  • Naruto wears a zip-up jacket and pants similar to a tracksuit.
  • The jacket and pants are orange, but the jacket has blue areas on the shoulders, a blue band at the bottom, and white ribbing around the collar that almost looks furry in some pictures.
  • His hair is short, yellow, and spiky.
  • Naruto wears a blue headband.
  • Black whiskers are drawn across his cheeks, with three whiskers on each side.
  • He wears blue shoes with the top area over the toes cut away.
  • Full Naruto costumes are available as well as just the jacket.

Sasuke

  • Sasuke has medium-length black hair.
  • He wears white knee-length shorts and a blue short-sleeve shirt.
  • The shirt has a large collar, much like an exaggerated turtleneck.
  • He wears a blue headband.
  • Sasuke wears white wristbands and legwarmers with narrow blue bands on each end.
  • Blue shoes with exposed toes complete his look.

Sakura

  • Sakura wears a red sleeveless dress/long shirt with slits up the side, and tight green shorts underneath, like biker shorts.
  • Her headband is also green.
  • She has pink hair that is long or short, depending on the time in the series.
  • Her shoes are green with exposed toes.

Kakashi

  • Kakashi wears dark blue pants, a dark blue long-sleeved shirt, and dark blue fingerless gloves with metal bands on the back.
  • He wears a green jacket-vest over it all, similar to a utility vest.
  • A mask extends from his clothing and covers his face to just past the nose.
  • Kakashi wears a dark blue headband.
  • One of his fighting techniques in the series involves a special ability in his left eye.
  • Sometimes he wears his headband tilted to cover the eye.
  • When the eye is exposed, there is a noticeable scar stretching from his eyebrow to the edge of his mask.
  • He has short gray hair in the back with long bangs sweeping forward above his head.
  • A Kakashi costume is available for purchase, or you can also buy the vest.

Others

There are countless other characters appearing throughout the show’s long run, so if a character catches your eye, study his or her look and see if you can mimic it. Wikipedia offers a complete list of characters if you need ideas for Naruto costumes.

The Headbands

All characters in Naruto wear headbands to show their ninja nature. The headband is a wide strip of cloth with a metal rectangle in the center. The metal is imprinted with a logo representing the wearer’s home village. For instance, the main characters from Leaf Village share the same leaf-swirl imprint. Male characters wear it tied directly across the forehead, while females may wrap it around the top of the head, using it more like a traditional headband to hold their hair back.

It’s easy to make your own headband from a strip of fabric. Cut it to the appropriate width and tie it behind your head, or sew it into a band if you’re using a stretchier material that you can slip over your head. For the “metal” square, you can paint it directly onto the band with silver fabric paint, or glue on a separate piece of material on top for a more raised look.

Aluminum foil will give you the right metallic sheen, or you could paint a piece of paper or cardboard silver. If you’re feeling ambitious, you could even use an actual scrap of metal to make the village identifier, painting on the logo or etching it directly into the base if you have the appropriate tools. If you don’t want to make your own headband, they are the most widely available accessories for Naruto costumes. You can find them at many online retailers, some toy stores, and Hot Topic.

Halloween Costumes

Halloween’s coming soon, and it’s time to pick the right costume for that Halloween party you go to every year. Halloween is that very special time of year when even the adults get to play dress-up, even a little bit of “make pretend” should the mood move them. For every Halloween party, passing out candy, or otherwise potentially spooky event, having an excellent costume makes the night all the more fun and all the more fantastic. Adults should not have to settle for whatever is left on the rack simply because they are a little bit older and a little bit bigger. Rather, adult costume stores have actually noticed an increase in adult costume demands over the last five years. While the popularity and origins of Halloween have come under intense scrutiny over the past ten years, adults who wish to partake of the ghoulish fun are seeking the right costume for just the right occasion.

So how do you go about picking something unique and different (because of course you want to stand out)?

It’s best to stay away from the top picks. Instead, check out the classic costumes, or the historical ones. Buy something that you can enhance with your own personal touches.

Once you’ve selected your costume, brainstorm ways you can personalize it to suit you. If you’ve decided to go as a witch, for example, think about adding a touch of color. Accessorize with something that’s unique. Or choose a theme, like a sea witch, and accessorize accordingly.

Don’t forget that makeup can also make a big difference. Glitter, glow in the dark or just plain dramatic are all options. If you’re wearing a costume that’s more on the horror side, go for realistic looking blood as a unique touch.

The key is to start with a basic costume and keep on the lookout for accessories that will set you apart. You’ll be guaranteed to show up in an unusual and unique costume that’s personalized to suit you!
